Training Weeks April 17, 2007

Hi everybody,
I would like to thank all of you, once again, for being part of my journey to Uganda. As you may know, since March 6 2007, I have being living in Uganda as part of the Peace Corps Program. During these weeks, I have learned about Ugandan history and culture thru the trainers, my host family and different activities guided by the Peace Corps. Also, I have learned about the Peace Corp Program in Uganda, its rules and regulations.
One of the best things I learned during this time is about human behavior. Some people may think that Peace Corps Volunteers are somehow humanitarians or exceptional humans dedicated to serve, but even if this could be the case, we are just humans. The only thing, we have in common is the ability to, in one way or another, face our fears. Do not get me wrong, there are exceptional people within us, but that is what we are HUMANS. Same thing I learned about the Ugandan community. Ugandans are humans, with weaknesses and virtues, just like us. The best thing I have learned so far is that “Humans are Humans everywhere, it does not matter the race, nationality or ethnicity they are”.
Now, I am looking forward to going to my site and do the best I can with my resources and abilities. For me, the Peace Corps is a great opportunity to get to know people from other cultures and share our knowledge. Also, it gives me the chance to live for two years in a country that, otherwise, I would just visit for two weeks at the most. I try to have no expectations, but I know that this experience will be just what I will make it.
I hope we can keep in touch and hopefully, when my husband comes to visit, I can download all my pictures. Also, soon, I will be sending some letters and artifact from Uganda to the schools participating in World Wise Schools.
Best to you,
Leira
